Couldn't be easier.  Sign up for Google Adsense.  When you get the ok, go to the google adsense site and get the code for a tall ad (120 X 600).  Create a normal block in the block editor and paste the code into the block content field. 

You can pretty it up by making a custom color scheme at the adsense website and putting the code between center html tags.  Thats it.

P.S. I have been impressed with Google Adsense.  Had the ok for my sites within 12 hours (overnight) and immediately had custom adds on three different sites on the same server.

Redo all the configuration for you ad and be sure you copy all the code. Then just paste it in to a normal block. Works everytime for me.
